Open letter to the University of Auckland Foundations from Staff
We write to you as a concerned group of Academic and Professional Staff of the University of Auckland, in your capacity as stewards of the University endowment. We call on you to divest from, and blacklist, the top 200 fossil fuel companies.
Global Divestment Mobilisation 2017
In mid-May 2017, people all over the world stood up to coal, gas and oil interests by pushing for fossil fuel divestment. In New Zealand, this took the form of pressuring the Australian government to take support away from the Adani Corporation's gigantic coal mine project in Carmichael, Australia. In addition, protesters continued to pressure banks to withdraw their investments from climate-destroying old technologies.
Win! The University of Canterbury has partially divests!
In April 2017, University of Canterbury announced that they would pull all of their direct investments from fossil fuel companies, and keep indirect investments below 1%. We still have a way to go before they fully divest!
Win! Auckland Council vote to Go Fossil Free
On 11 April 2017, thanks to our long campaign, Auckland Council announced that it would fully divest from coal, oil, and gas!
