This week we met with Westpac. We made it clear that Bathurst Resources’ plans for coal mining on the Denniston Plateau and surrounds would put another 218 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, an addition to climate change we just can’t afford.
We quoted their own policy which says, “Our commitment to the environment covers our own operations as well as the impact of our products and services.” We made sure they know that their words and their actions on sustainability just don’t add up.
Their response? They intend to keep on financing Bathurst Resources.
It is one thing not to know that you are doing something wrong, something that destroys the earth, something that will cause suffering to many people now and generations to come. But to know it, and still keep doing it, and to profit from it? That’s just unacceptable.
This week, people all around New Zealand are saying loud and clear – our future is not in fossil fuels! Take a look at what is going on around the country, and join our call.
