The University of Canterbury has partially divested!
On 12th April 2017, University of Canterbury announced that they would pull all of their direct investments from fossil fuel companies, and keep indirect investments below 1%. We still have a way to go before they fully divest!
The Campaign
Our University of Canterbury group is part of the Fossil Free Universities campaign.
University of Canterbury has a trust fund of over $90m invested in the equity (stock) market. As a reputable university, we have an opportunity to be leaders in a global movement that can actually bring a positive change for society.
Young people are going to have to endure the effects of global climate change, and our education institutions should act to become part of the solution.
What we’re asking for
- Immediately freeze all new and future investments in fossil fuels.
- Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.
