PRINCIPLES FOR
A JUST RECOVERY
from COVID-19

#JustRecovery

We call on our government to uphold these 6 principles at every level of its response as we recover from COVID-19.

  1. Put people’s health and human rights first, no exceptions.
Everyone has the right to be safe, healthy and live with dignity. We must devote resources and attention to those that need it most, and ensure any response is accessible to everyone.
  2. Honour Te Tiriti through partnership with Māori in all decision-making.
Our response must have Māori at the forefront of decision-making, be grounded in Kaupapa Māori, and uphold indigenous rights.
  3. Take action to stop climate change and build a just and sustainable future for all.
We must accelerate Aotearoa’s just transition to a low-carbon society and support our commitment to limiting climate change to 1.5°.
  4. Support workers and communities and create secure jobs and liveable incomes for all.
As people face changes in their work, we must have adequate welfare and re-training programmes, and focus on creating decent jobs that are sustainable and fair for all.
  5. Build a resilient economy centred on wellbeing for all people, where everyone contributes their fair share of tax to build the society we want.
We must transform our economy to put people and the planet first, and ensure that recovery supports communities, not corporations.
  6. Ensure transparency and allow for democratic scrutiny in all decision-making.
Government processes must be transparent and open for scrutiny, and participation in our democracy must be accessible for all citizens.
