Fossil Free UoA is a student-lead group formed in early 2015, supported by 350 Aotearoa.

We want the University of Auckland to put its money where its mouth is on sustainability and environmental science, and remove its money from the fossil fuel industry.

Click here to tell University of Auckland to divest from fossil fuels.

Behind the scenes, this means pressuring the University Council, the university’s main decision-making body, to endorse fossil fuel divestment. This must be done as part of a wider socially responsible investment strategy.

This way, the University Foundation, which manages the university’s endowment fund of over $80 million, can follow lead and divest from all fossil fuel industry companies in favour of more sustainable alternatives.

Furthermore, we’re publicly calling to action the University’s Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon. As the spokesperson and face of the university, he must demonstrate real leadership on climate change and sustainability and stop ignoring divestment.

As one of our core members and recent graduates Blaze Forbes put it: “if the University of Auckland takes the science of climate change seriously, and honours its role as a critic and conscience of society, then it should put its money where its mouth is and divest.”

So, our campaign objectives can be summarised as follows:

  • Have the Foundation implement policy excluding fossil fuel investments
  • Give the university three years to divest
  • Build a skilled, sustainable community of student climate activists
